STORY REPORTING IN 2020

June 2023

Under Reported Story Topics

One of the most important and most underreported stories at the time is the concentration camps in china that are illegally and inhumanly holding Muslim citizens. While various large news companies such as the New York Times and The Guardian have made articles regarding the camps, they have not utilized the most popular forms of social media to raise awareness for this tragedy. There are more broadcast and news videos on the first page of a Google search concerning  the fly that landed on Mike Pence's head than it does those who are being illegally held.

Following would be the judicial outcome of the officers who killed Breonna Taylor. Only 4 of the first page Google searches relate to the final judicial decision of Taylors case. This is especially appalling given how disrespectful the ruling is to both her family and her death. It is important that cases such as these, and especially those connected to Black Lives Matters movement.

Lastly I have found that the ICE Detention Centers and their inhumane conditions has been largely under reported. The only large new organization I was able to find who has reported on the conditions of the camp is the New York Times and CBS. this is a human rights violation that should be reported on by more prominent voices in news than is currently happening.

Over Reported Stories

An extremely over reported story is the infamous Pence fly. Although it was a very curious and entertaining event, given the state of the nation at the moment, it received way more attention than I believe was necessary. Multiple large news companies have covered the incident, including the New York Times, CNN, The Guardian, NPR, and the Atlantic. Given that many of these company's did not cover the stories I had previously listed, i find it unnerving that this is what they choose to put energy into.

The death of two young teens in 2019 after excessive use of a vaping product was tremendously over reported and its over exposure resulted in swift but unnecessary action by the federal government. Though the deaths of these young teens were very unfortunate, the over reporting of the event put all vaping products in a negative lighting, that they did not deserve. The consequence of saturating the media with this story is plainly clear from the new federal mandate that you must be 21 to now purchase any nicotine related products.

Lastly, The royal wedding between Prince Harry and Princess Meagan Markle, although captivating and romantic, swarmed all media companies and outlets for days. I understand that royal weddings have historically been very highly anticipated events, I don't believe that it was necessary for the entire world to be focused on the lives of two people simply wishing to lead their life.
